The work expresses the feelings od restriction and isolation often experienced with mental illness.

This original work by Anna Marie Harrington, copyright 2019, has become the icon of our organization. The caged bird represents the confinement one feels when living with mental illness..

This piece resonates with many of the people Anna Marie knew and also with many that she did not know. We all can relate to this beautiful little bird and have things in our lives which represent to us a feeling of being held back. Perhaps its addiction, medical illness, physical or other mental challenges, or perhaps simply a circumstance in our life that makes us feel restricted. The artist  does a sublime job of expressing this feeling of limitation.

We have adopted this image as our most prized work. The artist behind the founding of the Sunny Porch inspired us to use the  free bird and sun for our branding in representation of a place of recovery. We would like to help others find their sunny porches in life and understand that living with limitations is not a death sentence. Rather, that a full life is not only a right but also attainable.

The Seven Sorrows of Mary https://sunnyporch.org/seven-sorrows-of-mary/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=seven-sorrows-of-mary Fri, 09 Oct 2020 09:44:40 +0000 http://demo.curlythemes.com/art-gallery-wp/?p=190 Highly unique version of the Seven Sorrows of Mary which leaves a lasting impression.

Anna’s rendition of The Seven Sorrows of Mary, revises a classic Marian devotion focused on seven pains that Mary the mother of Jesus experienced in her life. Anna was raised Roman Catholic and some of her art reflects both her spiritual nature, religious pluralism, and influence of a traditional Catholic background.

Style and Emphasis

This image of Mary is gripping as she holds her enlarged bleeding heart. It emphasizes Mary’s deep love and suffering. Traditionally there are seen swords piercing her heart, each one representing one of her sorrows. Anna Marie’s version emphasizes one great sorrow with a full size sword. The star of David at her waist and a more middle eastern head covering and color express the artist’s inclusiveness and desire for diversity. The traditional blue dress is the color for Mary. The seven calla lilies represent her purity and kindness and may also elude to her “seven sorrows” or possibly the seven joys.

This work, Covet Foundation, by Anna Marie Harrington was copyrighted in 2020. It was one of the last finished works she created.

The Artist preferred not to name her pieces because she felt that it decided the meaning for others. Anna wished for others to decide for themselves what they see in her art. She cared about what it might mean to them and saw the possibility that different points of view may find their own meaning in her creations.

I believe this is what Anna Marie meant when she said that her art “was alive”. She would always say that her art was alive to her, that it was part of her.

What do you see in this art piece?
